Google reviews of Malinska are not only from July and August. Guests write about Easter holidays, autumn wellness weekends and even winter weddings, and one sums it up as “a place to rest in winter and in summer”. Here is how to enjoy Malinska off season, and what to do when it rains.
Why come outside the summer
- Peace and quiet: no queues for parking, and the seafront promenade is all yours.
- Better prices: accommodation is usually much cheaper than in high season.
- Mild climate: the tourist board calls Malinska’s climate the most favourable on Krk.
Spring: asparagus, walks and food festivals
In April and May the forests of Dubašnica turn green, and locals go out to pick wild asparagus along the paths. It is the best time for hiking and cycling before the heat. The sea is usually still too cold for most people until June.
Late May brings Sensa and the Malinska Walk & Taste food walks. Dates are in our Malinska events calendar.
Autumn: warm sea and the olive harvest
September is often the nicest month of all: the sea is still warm and the beaches are empty. In October the Olive Touch festival celebrates the olive harvest with tastings and hotel programmes, and in November the Outdoor Weekend invites hikers and cyclists onto the trails.
When it rains: what to do
- DUBoak: the maritime heritage centre on the waterfront tells the story of Krk oak, boats and the sea.
- Wellness: some hotels in Malinska have indoor pools and saunas; ask whether day passes are available.
- Krk town: 20 minutes by car, with the cathedral, the Frankopan castle and narrow old streets.
- Biserujka cave: a small show cave in the north-east of the island; it is open only part of the year, so check the opening times.
- Vrbnik: a village on a cliff, famous for its Žlahtina white wine.

Good to know before you come
- Many beach bars and some restaurants close after the season, so check opening hours.
- Choose accommodation with heating if you come in late autumn or winter.
- No ferry is needed: Krk is connected to the mainland by a bridge. See how to get to Malinska.
